I was a grad student of Clinical Psychology in the Smart-Alecky 70s, sadly a time when every pretentious person became obsessed with "liberating" themselves and the people around them. The issue of the day was either "this lib" or "that lib". Two of the overused catch phrases of that era were "stereotyping" and "sweeping generalizations". When someone tried to sympathize with a person by saying "I know how you feel," that person would readily retort, "Really? Tell me how I feel."
Looking back now, I see that there was only one possible, logical, and appropriate reply to that, and it is this: "Right now you feel like a sarcastic bitch, because that is how you sound like to me."
