Your Messenger message:

"Hi, Tony. If you have time, could you please interpret a strange dream I had this morning. Here is my diary entry:

"I had a vivid dream about meeting this student, but I never taught anyone named Jens Modekel. Or is it Modequel? I don't know how to spell the surname the guy mentioned in the dream.

"In the dream I was about to walk through the college quadrangle in the afternoon. The light had that bourbon color, streaming low, and the acacia trees were lush.I was supposed to cross the quad from [Building B] towards what was once [Building C]. But I was surprised to find students setting up a music gig under the large acacia tree at the center of the quad. There were students testing the sound system, and one student was strumming an acoustic guitar, checking its sound or tuning it by playing riffs. I made a mental note to myself that maybe I should hear the gig after going to the ___________ Department. There were tents at the side closer to [Building K], set up over tables and chairs, and there was a stall serving fair food, burgers, hotdogs, etc. So I had to step back toward Building B] and make my way around the concert area by walking along Building K]'s corridor.

"The student whom I had seen strumming his acoustic guitar was also now walking by [Building K]. He sounded good, I thought. He seemed to be heading in the same direction I was. This was my thought when we were both on the steps by the...Library [Building]. And so I turned to him and complemented his sound. He asked me if I was a musician and I said I was just a fan; my grandpa and cousins were musical but not me. He asked me if I liked jazz and started naming about four musicians, asking if I liked them. Back-and-forth, as if the young man was cheerfully asking for proof of fandom. I told him I liked them--there were three I recognized--but one of them, I told the guy, was unfamiliar. I asked him if he had heard some Pat Metheny because the young guy's nimble sound reminded me of Metheny. He said no.

"We somehow were already at [Building D], where the Department was. But there was, apparently, a basement cafeteria decorated like a breakfast place, white walls and tables, floral upholstery, etc. The young musician asked for a menu because he didn't like the food stall close to the gig. He wondered where I had heard live jazz before, and I told him about the Village Vanguard and Jazz Standard and other places in New York. He was so pleased. I asked what his name was and he pointed to the black tag on his chest. I realized that the tag, curiously, looked like the kind worn by someone in mourning, only slightly bigger. It spelled out the guy's name in all caps: 'JENS.' And he told me that his name was Jens Modequel. And there the dream ended. Was I dreaming about a dead guy?"

My reply:

Hello _____________!

The student Jens is neither a dead guy nor a separate, living, human being. He is a facet of your Self, and your dream indicates that you are currently torn between two different personalities or two different sets of values.

The name Jens, in Swedish, is a baby's name that means "Gift from God". It is possible that his surname, Modekel or Modequel, could be your psyche's way of encoding the phrases "mode kill" or "mode quell". Consider that Jens might be a part of you that retains innocence or a joyful existence that you sometimes dream of going back to, but that Jens is at the same time reminding you that this "mode" of being may have already been irreversibly killed or quelled. The black tag on his chest indicates that you are already mourning his possible demise.

At this time in your life your psyche is advising you not to build walls or distinctions between the different men you want to be. Tear down the walls and build bridges connecting all of your subpersonalities. The way to true joy, true innocence, truly heavenly music, and true friendship is the way to ego integration, not ego compartmentalization.
